What makes an AI chatbot good at roleplay
Every app in this category will hold a conversation. Roleplay is a harder test, and four things decide it — none of them are the ones marketing pages lead with.
- Whether the filter fires. The most common complaint about Character AI was never the writing, it was moderation stopping a scene that had not gone anywhere explicit. Two apps here run with no content filter at all.
- Whether it remembers. A story told across several sittings needs the character to know what happened last time. Three of the five carry something over; one carries nothing, on any plan, at any price.
- Where the character came from. A character somebody spent an hour writing holds a scene longer than the first one you assemble in three minutes. That is an argument for a library — until you want something specific, and then it is an argument for a builder.
- How much you get free. You cannot judge writing quality from five messages. Two apps give you enough to decide; three give you a demonstration.

Read the memory column first. It is the one that cannot be fixed by paying more. SpicyChat has no cross-session memory on its $24.95 plan any more than on its free one — it is structural, not a paywall.

Best AI girlfriend app
The same five apps answer a slightly different question here, because a girlfriend app is judged on continuity and presence rather than on how many characters are in the catalogue.
- Best overall: OurDream AI. Memory that carries between conversations, voice calls and video inside the $19.99 subscription rather than billed again in tokens, and a builder that opens before you pay. It is the most complete package if you want one companion rather than a catalogue.
- Cheapest way in: SpicyChat AI at $5.00. The largest library and a free tier of about 100 messages a day. The catch is permanent: it will not remember you tomorrow.
- Best voice and video: Candy AI at $13.99. Live calls rather than a recording read aloud, video up to two minutes, and images that keep the same face. About five free messages to decide on, which is the weak point.
If you only try one thing free, make it OurDream. Fifty messages and five images a day, no card, and the character builder open from the start — enough to find out whether writing your own companion is what you actually wanted.
Best NSFW AI chatbot
Two of the five run with no content filter at all, and a third lifts it on a paid tier. The differences between them are continuity and cost, not permissiveness.
- CrushOn AI — no filters, 24K of memory with manual pinning, $6.66 a month on the annual plan. The one for uncensored roleplay that runs across sessions.
- SpicyChat AI — no filters, the largest library, and adult content available on the free tier, which most rivals put behind the paywall.
- GirlfriendGPT — the most explicit in its own marketing, but voice starts on the second paid tier and video costs coins on top of the $14 subscription.

How to choose
Start with the memory question. If your answer is that the character must know what happened last week, the list is three apps long before you look at anything else: OurDream, CrushOn, GirlfriendGPT. No amount of money buys it on the other two.
Then check the free tier against how you decide. If you need a week with something before paying, SpicyChat and OurDream are the only two that allow it. Three messages a day or twenty in total will not tell you whether the writing holds up.
