Six things that actually differ between these apps. Everything else in their marketing is the same paragraph rewritten.
Nearly every app calls itself free, and nearly every app means something different by it. Some give you a genuine free tier you can sit on forever with a daily message cap. Some give you a handful of messages once, then a paywall. Some give you a trial that quietly needs a card up front.
Before you sign up anywhere, find the number: how many messages per day, and does the counter reset. If a site doesn’t state it, that’s the answer — it’s a trial dressed up as a free plan. Candy AI, the strongest app on this page, doesn’t publish its free limit at all; testers report anywhere between five messages and a hundred, which points at the number being A/B tested.
A free tier you can live on and a free trial that ends in three days are not the same product. Most rankings never tell you which one you're clicking.
This is the one thing that separates an app you keep using from one you delete after two weeks. Every one of these apps sounds convincing for the first ten messages. The question is whether it still knows your name, your job and what you talked about last Tuesday after a month of daily chats.
Most don't. They hold a rolling window of recent messages and let everything older fall out, so the character slowly turns back into a stranger. A few keep a separate profile of facts about you and pull from it, which is why they stay coherent much longer. You can test this in five minutes: mention something specific and unusual, chat about other things for a while, then ask about it.
Filters vary wildly and are rarely documented. Some apps refuse anything beyond flirting. Some allow explicit text but block images. Some allow both on the paid plan only, which is worth knowing before you subscribe on the strength of the free tier.
Filters also change without notice — an app that was permissive in January can tighten in March after a payment provider complains, and existing subscribers usually find out mid-conversation. If this matters to you, look for apps that have kept a stable policy for a year rather than the ones advertising “no limits” loudest this week.
Voice is the feature most often oversold. Nearly every app now offers spoken replies, but there's a wide gap between a natural voice with real timing and a flat text-to-speech read of the same message. Several of these apps also cap voice separately from text, so an unlimited plan turns out to be unlimited typing and a fixed number of voice clips a month.
Generated photos have the same problem in reverse: they look impressive in the marketing, and then the face changes between images because the app doesn't lock the character's appearance. If a consistent look matters, check whether the app generates from a fixed character seed or just re-prompts from scratch each time.
The headline price is almost never what you pay. The advertised figure is usually the annual plan divided by twelve, billed as one charge up front; the month-to-month price is often double. On top of that, several apps run a credit system for images and voice, so you top up on the side even while subscribed.
Work out the number you’d actually be charged next month, then read the refund clause. Two of the five apps here state outright in their terms that fees are non-refundable, which is exactly the sort of thing you want to know before you enter a card.
Every price on this site is the month-to-month figure from the provider’s own pricing page, not the discounted annual rate the landing page leads with.
You're typing personal things into someone else's server. Worth thirty seconds on the policy: whether conversations are retained, whether they're used to train the model, whether a human might read flagged chats, and whether deleting your account actually deletes the history.
Check the billing descriptor too. Some of these apps bill under an obvious brand name that will appear on a shared statement; others use a neutral parent company. Neither is a dealbreaker, but it's the kind of detail nobody mentions until it's already on the card.
No app is asked for comment before publication, and no placement in the ranking is for sale. Where a figure can’t be verified on an official page, it says so.
We take the month-to-month figure, not the annual plan divided by twelve that most sites quote as the headline price.
How many messages, per day or in total, and whether the counter resets. Where a provider hides the number, we say so.
Who the company is, which country the contract sits in, how refunds work and whether cancelling is a button or an email.
Prices, limits and filters in this niche change without notice. Every figure carries the month it was last verified.
